Cenote Diving
From: $120.00
Diving in the cenotes of the Mayan Riviera is truly the ‘cherry on top’ of your trip to Mexico. This is the style of diving you can only try in Mexico, and it’ll blow your mind away. Literal, incredible beauty! Witness games of light, stalactites and stalagmites, and layers of fresh and salt-water that create incredible visual effects. If you can believe it: the entire Yucatan peninsula was formerly the bottom of what we know as today’s ocean. According to one version of the theory, after a meteorite fell to earth about 64 million years ago, it ascended above sea level and created a land. Then, tropical rain and groundwater washed out spaces in soft limestone, forming grottoes, tunnels and caves. Cenotes came out as a result of the collapse of the ground. They’re formed by rock collapsed under its own weight, creating access to the underground cavity (cave). The Mayans considered cenotes a sacred place, gateways to the realm of the dead. In total, in the Yucatan there are about 8000 cenotes.
